Why do we need supervision?
From 1st April 2015, all occupational therapists are required to register with CORU, in order to practice in Ireland (The Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005).
The role of CORU is to protect the public by promoting high standards of professional conduct, education, training and competence through statutory registration of health and social care professionals. As part of this, CORU requires all occupational therapists to undertake continuous professional development (CPD).
CORU (2014) reinforce the need for occupational therapist to "keep professional knowledge and skills up to date, ensuring that professional knowledge, skills and performance are of a high quality, based on the best available evidence, up to date and relevant to your practice". CORU (2014) suggest, that in order to keep your professional knowledge and skills up to date, occupational therapists should seek and engage in supervision in professional practice on an on-going and regular basis.
Likewise, the Association of Occupational Therapists Ireland (2010) state "the overall purpose of professional supervision for occupational therapists is to monitor and maintain professional competence while supporting ongoing learning and growth within the scope of professional practice".
